1899 Inauguration of the Henrichenburg ship lift

The Henrichenburg ship lift is an key building construction for the Dortmund-Ems canal and enables transport up to the harbour of Dortmund. 14 metres of height difference had to be overcome with the aid of a swimming lift structure. Technical novelty combined with programmatic architecture characterised the Henrichenburg ship lift facilities. Emperor Wilhelm II personally attends the inauguration on 11 August 1899. This reflects the importance of economic and technical innovations in the empire.
