1896/1902 Inauguration of the Emperor Wilhelm memorials in Porta Westfalica and Hohensyburg
Gründung des Provinzialverbandes Westfalen für soziale und kulturelle Aufgaben
The Westphalian province memorial of Wilhelm I constructed after designs by the architect Bruno Schmitz is inaugurated in 1896 on the Porta Westfalica near Minden. The Hohensyburg memorial of the Emperor follows six years later for the Westphalian industrial region. Both visually dominant state memorials are an expression of the special associative spirit of the Westphalian provinces to the Prussian-oriented national state. They are characterised by the tradition of memorials typified towards the end of the 19th century.
